Reverse Culture Shock

January 10, 2008

I’ve been back for two days now and I am slowly adjusting to being back home. Things are a tad different; my memory of certain things aren’t exactly what I expected them to be but that’s not surprising. I am also a tad unsure of how to get back into things. I spent most of yesterday feeling groggy while trying to reacquaint myself with my things such as my computer. Funny how it sounds but it’s true! I have yet to unpack my bags and go through my mess of clothes, books and toiletries. Lately it seems procrastination is a good friend of mine, sometimes too close!

I know I’ve got to get back into the swing of things and start the job search and just put myself out there. It’s just been so long since I’ve been away that I’ve forgotten how things work here and what the protocol is on certain things. I never quite expected to experience this upon returning. I had always prepared myself for the culture shock when I’d left the country and headed over to Asia but I never expected to have to deal with this reverse culture shock upon returning. Seeing things you have known all your life but forgetting how it all functions as a cohesive unit is what is plaguing me at the moment. Trying to make sense (again!) of this culture and what I know will be on my mind for the next little while.
